Food for going to remote places

While we sailed the Pacific I thought we would be able to buy everything we wanted (perhaps not needed), but this is not the case. So if you are saying farewell to your loved ones, how about a food care package?

You might want to include a note, that they may not think they may need these items, but the day may come when they might appreciate them!

Things to include:

  • tinned veges-yep! We relied on them in remote places, think:
    • brands they love
    • common items they may not think of but may be grateful for later – potatoes, carrots, mushrooms- who would have thought we would ever have used them, but we have!
    • items a little bit different- asparagus
    • small cans- you cannot buy the small portions at all in the Pacific islands- we love small cans of sphagetti, baked beans, pineapple, edamame, corn, mixed beans, the list goes on, so we dont need to worry about putting in the fridge
    • tin tomatoes, jars of pasta sauces, passata, all useful for many dishes
  • Dried goods fruit/veg
    • dried peas- yes, these are amazing as they actually are firm and green when reconstituted rather than mushy. We add them to our rice when cooking, casseroles etc
    • dried fruit- blueberries are my favourite (thank you mum for the idea); I love sultanas and raisins but they go all sugary; blueberries last ages and they can be used in baking, muffins, pancakes, porridge, casseroles; they’re a great all rounder

  • Dried eggs
    • I never thought I would need dried eggs, and they are terrible for scrambled eggs, but they are a godsend for baking. In parts of the Pacific half of my dozen eggs would be rotten but I could use dried eggs for muffins, glazing, and other baking

  • tin butter- there have been places we have been where we can only by margarine. While tinned butter is expensive, it is long lasting and is a lot nicer than margarine, so a great back up.
  • Milk Products
    • fresh dairy can be impossible to get
    • think dried milk, UHT milk (more bulky)
    • I have dried buttermilk- great for baking and pancakes
    • some yachties I have met make their own yogurt
  • Sea sickness foods- happens to the best of us
    • when the waves are breaking the tummy can be queasy; ideas? two minute noodles, tinned peaches, tin sphagetti, Pringles, Powerade, Fizzy drinks, sea sick tablets- it’s very personal really but you may be able to include some of these!!
  • Bread making ingredients
    • is your yachtie friend a baker? I hated the sugary stale breads we could buy so I soon learnt how to bake bread- how about giving them bread ingredients: flour in a totally enclosed plastic container, dried yeast, a silicon loaf tin, and recipe
    • also include a recipe for flat bread- so easy and we used it heaps- experiment in your own kitchen and share your ideas- again never thought I would need this, but boat made flat bread has become one of our staples!!
    • I add nuts and seeds to my bread- I add a handful of the Red Tractor Paleo Mix as it includes linseed, sunflower, almond, flax, sesame, chia- I always declare it and never have a problem with border control.
  • Personal likes- Vegemite comes to mind, coffee, tea, chocolates, biscuits
